Testing Leather Types

A simple test to help figure out what type of leather you have is to do the following.

In a non conspicuous spot drip a small amount of water. It will do one of three things:

  1. The water will penetrate immediately and darken the leather. This is nude, natural or unfinished leather. Can be very difficult to work with or repair.
  2. The water sits there and when you rub it, it darkens or absorbs in. This is semi-nude or lightly finished leather sometimes called semi-aniline. Can be very difficult as well to work with.
  3. The water sits there and when you rub it, it just moves around there is no darkening. This is finished leather (most car leathers) which is the easiest to work with.
